    Meet our Skaters
    (Contributors)

During their warm-ups, we interviewed our skaters and asked them:

"What about Yuri!!! on Ice makes you keep coming back to it?"

    Ab Initio

    Merch Artist

“We were born to make history” AND IT DID! It’s such an impactful mini-series that I’m overcome with fury on behalf of its brevity if I ever think about it for more than a minute.

    Alaina Ugolini

I used to figure skate for many years, and i'm gay, #yurionice

I keep coming back to YOI for the cast of charming, funny, and loveable characters that populate the show. I find myself inspired by Yuuri’s determination, perseverance, and growth when I feel like I’m in a slump.

    Angel

    Writer

Everything. YOI had me hook, line and sinker the moment I first laid eyes on it, and to this day I find myself singing to History Maker or doing silly imitations of some of the programs. The story and the characters are all too cute for my heart and I hold them all very dear to me. People have comfort food, I have comfort Yuri on Ice

    badsongpetey

    Page Artist

The characters, all of them, they're all so engaging. Every episode had me completely hooked, and I'm not even a figure skating fan.

YOI is a fresh air whether it’s for the sportsmanship, relationships or just as an anime

    Cavalierious

I just love the characters. They have such life and personality.

I only started to watch YOI end of last year, but then I rewatched it at least 10 times. Yuuri and his feelings of inferiority/resignation at the start resonate with me a lot as a former competitive dancer. Seeing him become more comfortable and confident, and gain someone who he can share his passion with is incredibly comforting.

    euna

    Writer

"We call everything on the ice 'love,'" — and from the very first episode, the show never loses sight of this. I come back to YOI again and again because of the immense love and care it has for the characters, the sport, and the story it wants to tell.

    fluosamere

    Spot Artist

it's upon watching it that i started to internally re-conciliate with my queerness growing up. i relate a lot to yuuri, i even started figure skating because of it !

    Hanyu Art

    Page Artist

I'm coming back to YOI because it’s simply something I’ve never seen before. It’s all about Victor, Yuuri and Yurio looking each for their way, trying to figure out who they are and becoming victorious during the process. What makes it special is that they all want the same, they just need to grab it in a very different way.

    hunnimochi

    Page Artist

YOI was the first series to introduce me to fandom spaces, and it was so special being able to connect with people around the world about the same interest! It's just such a feel good show with the most loveable characters 🫶

    japansace

    Writer

The realism/relatability of the characters and the loving portrayal of Yuuri and Victor's relationship.

    jessowo

    Page Artist

I grew up figure skating and hated it, watching YOI was the first time I felt like figure skating was an art performance people loved instead of a chore lol. I also like the characters and find them cute and endearing

    Ji

    Merch Artist

I love how comforting it is to watch! And I love seeing Yuri's confidence slowly bloom. I also enjoy seeing the progression of Yuri and Victor's relationship. Seeing them fall for each other makes me so happy!!

    Khameleon storm

    Spot Artist

Every time I watch YOI, I see it in a new light compared to the last time I watched it, and it motivates me to keep going even in my toughtess moments.

    Kiboutie

    Writer

The way Victor says "Yuuuuriiii~", voice dripping with honey, heart eyes brighter than my soul.

    Konfetty___

    Spot Artist

In a way, YoI has been such a big part of my life, I can't imagine it without it. The music makes me emotional everytime, the show and characters bring me so much confort and just the Love it represents makes it so special to me.

    Ladyxagh

    Page Artist

That comforting feeling, and at the same time, as an artist, seeing how everyone fights for what they love! Seeing someone not give up can also motivate you.

    Lei Qi

    Page Artist

Definitely the soundtracks and inspirational tale of growth :D Some of my favourite soundtracks are: In regards to love (Agape & Eros), La Parfum de Fleurs, Theme of King JJ, and Passacailles in Barcelona

    lolave_art

    Spot Artist

I get so emotional while watching it lol (partially due to nostalgia). every time i come back to it i just fall in love with the different characters and their dynamics again

    Makkareads

    Writer

It's such a well-written story, with depth in its portrayal of mental health struggles and an enduring message of perseverance, but what really keeps me coming back is its amazing, tender love story. For me, the show is love, and it will always be my comfort watch.

    Mari

    Page Artist

The skating and music! I remember being invested in each character's performance because it gave me a quick glimpse into who they are and how they got there on the rink. Even the minor ones were fun to watch!

    miscellmao

    Merch Artist

The lighthearted and funny moments of Yuuri's character, paired with the animation and music of the intense performances!

    Moose

    Linocut Artist

It's a huge source of nostalgia for me. This was the first anime I've ever watched so it's surreal getting to be a part of the zine

    nyubtka

    Spot Artist

emotional damage, silliness and a soundtrack that owns my souli never recovered.

    ocean (platonicyearner)

    Writer

There's no one I relate to quite as much as I do Yuuri and Victor. Their journey to finding not just each other but also their spirit for life and love finds a way to make me hopeful even on days I want to be my most emo. They're annoying like that smh (affectionate)

    okidokiokami

    Cosplayer

I was a latecomer to the YOI fandom, but I learned so much about myself through these characters that I adore. YOI helped me through my gender journey, and continues to carry such an emotion weight every rewatch.

    Oliver Niko

    Page Artist

The nostalgia of the times we became joyous over each episode; the growth of the characters and their beautiful routines; the unapologetic queerness.

    omontz

    Writer

It's a super fun and cute show and also I love gay people and great music, but also I do love how it depicts imposter syndrome and anxiety!!!

    PamCakes

    Comic Artist

Seeing friends experience YOI for the first time makes for a great excuse to rewatch the show. The way the show portrays a distinct array of characters with big emotions and goals, makes their drive to succeed contagious, and makes me want to try my best at whatever my current goal may be.

    Patapoulpe

    Merch Artist

I love how funny and relatable the characters are, especially Yuuri. The anime also made me a fan of figure skating, so it's very dear to me.

    Peyca

Yuri on Ice is such a special show for an entire generation of anime fans, it will always have a special place in my heart as well

    Pill

    Page Artist

YOI is a comfort show I can’t ever get enough of and I’m happy the community is still preserving its legacy. I see myself in Yuuri a lot, I love how vulnerable the show gets and how it portrays gender expression in a way that is so appealing to me.

    Somie

    Page Artist

I found the show at the perfect time, and it's stuck with me since. It convinced me to figure skate again (which I still do as a hobby)... Also, Yuuri is just like me fr, so his story has always been really inspiring and comforting!

Half-jokes aside, I could watch the performances on ice for hours and the glimpses of the skaters' lives around it all always make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. It's one of my comfort shows, definitely.

I've been writing since I was 7 and haven't stopped. I heard about fanfiction when I was in middle school, and grew to love it dearly. The exhortations of my muse's whims are inscrutable and this makes me a very slow writer, but I hate not writing fanfic more. (I mostly write fanfic, but after interning for a few mods, knew I would have the most fun being the shipping mod, lol.) I also make MVs when I have the idea and the time. When I'm not doing either of those things, I'm doing fiber arts or playing video games!
